Enrollment Continues - Head Start and Early Head Start

Enrollment for fall 2008 for Head Start and Early Head Start is open. Can't believe it is already that time!

We did not have enough spaces this year, so if you have or know of a child (ages 6 weeks to 4 years) who may be eligible, please stop in at any of our centers and pick up an application and return the completed application soon.

Wrapping for a Good Cause - Thank you

Again this year staff and volunteers were at the Village Mall boxing and wrapping gifts.  Money raised is being used to fund additional materials for our adult education program for Head Start and Early Head Start families.  The first item is a much needed new printer for the computers our learners use.  Many thanks to all of you who helped, and many many thanks to all who stopped to have gifts wrapped.

Congratulations!   Congratulations!    Congratulations!   Congratulations!

Five students in our adult education program recently received their GEDs.  They are as follows:  Nicholass Hart, Candi Menifee, Cedric Parker, Aleecia Pitts, and Marcus Whitlow.

Project Underpants

For the past five years, Auburn University School of Nursing students have been keeping local Head Start children dry.

Students participating in the nursing school’s annual fundraiser, “Project Underpants,” gathered numerous boxes of new underwear and socks – all donated by local residents and students. Each package of underpants and socks then was generously donated to The Alabama Council on Human Relation’s Head Start program.

“An important emphasis of the nursing program is community outreach and involvement,” said AUSON Instructor Cheryl Smith. “Students are encouraged to get involved in areas that reflect their interests in nursing.”

All items were distributed to classrooms at Boykin Center in Auburn, Darden Center in Opelika and Edelman Center in Hurtsboro. The donations will last throughout the school year.

“Project Underpants has been wonderful,” said Darden Center Early Childhood Coordinator Sue Williams. “It’s really helpful to have underwear and socks on hand when children have accidents.”

"Sweat Week" Volunteers

The Sunshine Shop in Opelika is clean and organized and lots of materials have been copied and collated – thanks to about 30 local teenagers who recently volunteered about 18 hours of their time to the shop.

Auburn United Methodist Church’s youth group participated in the annual “Sweat Week.” During “Sweat Week,” teens went to various organizations in the community to lend a helping hand. The Alabama Council on Human Relations’ Sunshine Shop was one of the organizations.

“I am very thankful for the help and hard work of the volunteers,” said Mandy Lashley, manager of the Sunshine Shop. “The volunteers were dedicated and positive the entire week.”

The youth group volunteers did many things in the shop, including sorting and inventorying clothes, organizing the racks and filing papers.  In addition, they helped with various summer copying and collating projects to help us prepare materials needed for staff and parents.

The Sunshine Shop is located behind Darden Head Start Center in Opelika.  Clothes, household items and furniture are just a few of the donated items in the shop. Items are available free of charge to families of Head Start and Early Head Start children.
