Why We Need Help

    1)     Our preschool classrooms have a child-staff ratio of nine to one, which is excellent.  However, some children need one-one attention during part of the day to learn the skills they will need to enter kindergarten.  All of the children benefit from the enrichment that a special activity can bring.

    2)    Over one quarter of the adults in Alabama do not have sufficient literacy skills for daily living or decent jobs.  That means they also do not have the skills needed to help their children in school.  ACHR and sister agencies serve a large number of these Alabamians.  However, in order to be of help, programs like ours must have many things including dedicated staff and volunteers, sources of new ideas and ways of doing things, and, of course, funding.

    3)    Federal law states that Head Start programs (including Early Head Start and our Family Services Center) may receive federal funds only if the programs can "match" the money. For every $100 of program money, we get only $80 from the Federal Government. We must get the other $20 from the community in "match" or "in-kind." If we do not get the community match, we do not get Federal money.

"Match" includes items donated to the program that can be used by the program to help Head Start/Early Head Start children and families. Volunteer time given to help the program, Head Start/Early Head Start children or their parents can be counted as "match."

Obtaining enough match each year is a challenge, but it allows us to continue to provide services to children living with low income and their families.  We appreciate all support from the community.
