The Family Services Center (FSC) was begun under a grant from Health and Human Services that focused on assisting Head Start parents in the areas of literacy, employability, and substance abuse prevention. The program has evolved and in addition now offers general counseling and education in a broad range of areas including parenting, consumer education, and housing. Learning groups are kept small and computers are used to further individualize education. Some participants choose to work almost totally on their own and interface with a teacher only occasionally. Given enough encouragement and time, some learners have progressed from almost no reading skills to passing the GED. The Family Services Center staff helps participants choose an appropriate direction based on skills and interests, and then search for and learn to keep employment. Fundamental skills such as regular attendance, punctuality, organization and communication are addressed and practiced. Former FSC participants have gone on to advanced education and success in a variety of occupations. The Family Services Center is located on the Darden campus in Opelika. Transportation can be arranged from Boykin Center in Auburn to Darden. |
