The WIC (Woman, Infants and Children) program provides nutrition education and weekly vouchers for nutritious foods for pregnant and nursing women and their infants and children up to five years of age.  There is an income criteria and the participant must also have a medical need, such as anemia that may limit growth and development.

Once certified eligible by a nurse or nutritionist, participants are given appropriate nutrition and/or health education, any needed referrals for other services are made, and food vouchers are given.  Participants are rechecked every six months.  Vouchers for WIC-approved foods including formula are picked up every one to three months, depending on the schedule agreed on with the WIC professional and can be used at most grocery stores.  An additional nutrition education event is provided at the third month visit.

ACHR offers WIC services at Darden Center in Opelika on Tuesdays and at Boykin Center in Auburn on Thursdays and Fridays.  Call 821-8336 and ask for "WIC" to set up an appointment and for a list of information to bring.
